Police DepartmentDetective Division
Special Victims Section

The Special Victims Section (SVS) investigates crimes against the most vulnerable segments of the community. Their cases involve:

  • Crimes by or against children
  • Child pornography
  • Child abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexual assault
  • Crimes against the elderly
  • Crimes against individuals with special needs or dementia
  • Human trafficking

The SVS consists of a Detective Sergeant, five Detectives, and a School Resource Officer. This Section is specially trained to handle sensitive cases that often involve children, the elderly and other members of our most vulnerable populations. The goal always is to conduct investigations in a manner that protects the personal dignity of the victims.

An important component of SVS work is preventing those at risk from becoming victims. SVS Detectives are familiar faces in Greenwich schools and community organizations such as the YWCA, which partner with the Greenwich Police Department on education and prevention programs. In fact, every SVS Detective is assigned as a liaison to Greenwich public and private schools. They also spend time in the community speaking to organizations and individuals on topics ranging from Internet safety and cyber bullying to stranger dangers and risky behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse, teen dating violence, stalking and sexting.

The SVS Supervisor and Detectives participate on a broad range of special teams and boards, including the Juvenile Review Board, Interagency Team, Human Trafficking Task Force, Internet Crimes Against Children, Youth Council, and the Multi-Disciplinary Team at the Child Guidance Center.

In 2007, the Greenwich Police Department, in partnership with the Board of Education, established the School Resource Officer Program (SRO). Under this program, an experienced, SVS Detective is assigned to the Greenwich High School on an ongoing basis to provide resources and information to faculty, students and parents, and to be a role model for students.
