The Greenwich Police Department’s Detective Division is responsible for investigating and preventing crimes against people and their property. Investigations cover a wide range of offenses, including:
- Auto Theft
- Child Abuse
- Computer/Technology-Related Crime
- Missing Persons
- Sexual Assaults
The Detective Division is comprised of a captain, a lieutenant, five sergeants and 23 detectives. Due to the nature and complexity of the cases investigated, many of the officers in this Division have special skills and areas of expertise. For example, there are teams that specialize in Forensics, Narcotics, and Special Victims Sections.
There are also two court liaison officers who coordinate activities between the Greenwich Police Department and the judicial system. These officers are responsible for processing arrestees through the court system. This entails serving arrest warrants, transporting arrestees to/from court, ensuring that court documents are completed properly and submitted to appropriate court officials, and arranging for officers and witnesses to testify at hearings and trials.
Protecting the safety of Greenwich neighborhoods requires a strong partnership between local residents and the police department. The Detective Division is actively involved in outreach programs to build positive relationships, trust and support within Greenwich communities. For example, Detectives frequently speak at local events, participate in youth-related activities sponsored by Boys and Girls Clubs and other organizations, and conduct Police Day Open House tours.
Detectives also serve as instructors at the Citizen’s Police Academy and Youth Citizen’s Police Academy. These programs, offered twice a year, are designed to give local residents first-hand knowledge of law-enforcement work through role-playing exercises, demonstrations and ride-a-longs.
