John was born at Greenwich Hospital, grew up in Bruce Park, and has spent most of his life in Greenwich. After attending St. Mary Grammar and St. Mary High School, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Fairfield University. Following that, he spent 2 years in the Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa, where he taught English Language and Literature in secondary school. Returning to Greenwich, he taught briefly and received a Master of Arts in Teaching before joining Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City for a career of 27 years, most recently in credit risk management.
In 1998 John was elected to the Representative Town Meeting from District 2, and in 2008 from District 9 until the present. During this time he has sat on the Appointments, Parks and Recreation, and Public Works Committees. He was also a member of the Transportation Committee of the Plan of Conservation and Development Implementation Committee.
Since his retirement from Chase, he has volunteered at Greenwich Hospital and Call-A-Ride of Greenwich. He has served as President and Treasurer for the Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary Board for two, two year terms each and concurrently as a Trustee on the Hospital's Board of Trustees for two years. He also was elected President and Treasurer for Call-A-Ride of Greenwich. For several years, John sat on the Board of the Transportation Association of Greenwich. For many years he spent Saturday mornings at the Book Swap at Greenwich's Resource Recovery Center.
