Transportation
Although we have grown to accept the smell of engine exhaust as a part of everyday life, our nation is experiencing an epidemic of illnesses made worse by air pollution. Over the past ten years, hundreds of studies have been published demonstrating special vulnerability to air pollution among those with serious illnesses, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lung cancer.
Connecticut’s air quality is exceptionally poor. Polluted air flows into the state from densely populated areas in the Northeast Corridor and the Midwest. In addition, Connecticut residents now drive 31 billion miles in three million vehicles each year. Vehicle use is the largest contributor to the state’s air pollution problem…
The dirtiest part of the day for many children is the bus ride to and from school as they sit in a string of cars and buses, often in rush hour traffic. Many people assume that their individual contributions are insignificant, yet the collective effect is damaging to health.
So, what can Greenwich residents do to help?
- Support No-Idling initiatives
- Drive with others
- Get onboard public transportation
- Decide to walk or bike instead of drive/improve your health
- Soften the impact of vehicle use with regular maintenance
Individuals
Idling can be a hard habit to break. But remembering to turn off the ignition while parked or waiting not only helps air quality in the immediate vicinity, but can also save fuel – and money.
Schools and Other Organizations
No one wants their children breathing exhaust, and yet a great deal of idling takes place at schools, where buses and cars line up to drop off and pick up children. Help make schools a healthier place for kids.
Drive Smarter to Reduce Pollution
Neglecting regular vehicle maintenance can cause your car to use more fuel and pollute the air more. Find out what simple steps you can take to get your car to run cleaner and use less fuel.
