OLD GREENWICH FORCE MAIN BREAK On December 12, 2008, the Old Greenwich Force Main, which conveys wastewater from Old Greenwich, Riverside, North Mianus, and Cos Cob, experienced a break at Sound Shore Drive, in front of the Cos Cob Power Plant Site. This force main conveys flows from the Old Greenwich, Chapel Lane, and Cos Cob Pump Stations. The Town's Department of Public Works Sewer Division took immediate steps to address the force main break, and worked through the weekend. Technical difficulties resulting from a utility conflict and the excavation depth have complicated repairs. The Town and Connecticut Natural Gas are coordinating today to address the utility conflict and allow the force main repair to proceed as soon as possible. More information regarding the exact nature of the break will be known when the excavation is complete and the section is repaired.
All utilities in the area have been contacted and are coordinating with the Town's repair team. Aquarion is managing its potable water system to maintain its integrity at all times.
The DPW is asking residents in Old Greenwich, Riverside, North Mianus, and Cos Cob to please continue water conservation measures at this time. This will help minimize flow to these pump stations while these repairs are conducted. Minimizing the flow to the pump stations means less wastewater is being discharged to the environment. The Department of Public Works thanks everyone who helps us as we work through this emergency.
