Mosquitoes Test Positive for WNV in Greenwich The State of Connecticut Mosquito Management Program announced that Culex pipiens mosquitoes trapped in Greenwich in July 15, 2008 have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). These are the first positive mosquitoes identified by the Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station (CAES) in Greenwich this year. In addition to Greenwich, positive mosquito pools have been found in Milford, Stamford, Bridgeport and Stonington, Connecticut. Recently a human case of West Nile Virus was diagnosed in the Town of Sherman, Connecticut. The resident was between 10 and 20 years of age and became ill during the third week of June. The Culex pipiens mosquitoe is generally a bird and mammal biting mosquito which breeds in artificial containers like discarded tires, birdbaths and catchbasins. The State Mosquito Management Program continues to trap and test mosquitoes at three site locations in Greenwich as part of their program, which maintains a network of 91 mosquito-trapping stations in 72 municipalities throughout the State. The trapping program will continue throughout October, 2008.
