2005-06 Influenza Season Influenza (commonly called "flu") is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can be mild or severe and infects millions of Americans every year. The best way to prevent getting the flu is to get vaccinated.
For the 2005-2006 influenza season, four licensed manufacturers expect to provide flu vaccine to the U. S. population. At present only three have had lots approved for distribution. Based upon this information, it is estimated that between 71 and 97 million doses of vaccine will be produced.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the lack of specific guidance in the distribution of influenza vaccine last year caused a significant amount of confusion and contributed to the waste of millions of doses. As a result, a specific timeframe (October 24, 2005) was chosen for this year's flu season so that flu vaccine could be distributed to those at highest risk for complications from influenza and offer an opportunity for others to be vaccinated.
Unfortunately, because of the uncertainties surrounding the production of influenza vaccine, the exact number of doses available for distribution and the timing of vaccine delivery, the Department of Health will begin by serving individuals at highest risk for complications from influenza at scheduled clinics. Once this population is served, vaccine will be made available to others seeking protection. All scheduled clinics outlined in this release will be subject to cancellation and/or rescheduling. In addition, some clinics will be held for "targeted" populations.
For those who are healthy and between the ages of 5 and 49, FluMist, the nasal mist flu vaccine, is available. FluMist is made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu when administered. Although FluMist is not recommended for those who are pregnant, it can be used by persons, including health care workers, who are not caring for severely immunocompromised patients in special care units. Persons in close contact with groups at high risk for influenza-related complications and others desiring protection against the flu can also use it. FluMist (LAIV) is available in some doctor's offices and pharmacies.
