Blue Bin Recycling

The Town of Greenwich has contracted The Greenwich Recycling Co. to provide this home pick-up service. Please call The Greenwich Recycling Co. at 203-622-0550 with any questions regarding the blue bin recycling program. Residents can use their blue bin for curbside recycling of items listed below. On your designated pick-up day, put your recyclables in your blue bin and leave it at the curb in front of your house by 7:00 a.m.

Call The Greenwich Recycling Co. at 203-622-0550:

  • If your blue bin was not emptied
  • To find out your pick-up day
  • To find out how to obtain a blue bin

The following items can be put in your blue bin:

  • Newspapers - Place newspapers on top of blue bin either tied with string or placed in a brown paper bag. Include all sections of the paper plus any coupon inserts and flyers that arrive inside.
  • Plastic containers, such as beverage or detergent containers, marked with #1 or #2 on the bottom. Empty and rinse, leave labels on, discard caps.
  • Glass containers - unbroken food or beverage bottles and jars. They can be clear, brown or green colored glass. Empty and rinse, leave labels on, discard caps.
  • Aluminum or tin beverage and food cans, aluminum trays and foil.

Please empty and rinse all items, and discard all tops, corks, caps, etc., which might jam the recycling center's machines. Discard broken glass to avoid injury to handlers.

Do not include in your blue bin:

  • Plastic bags, flyers, junk mail, magazines, wrapping paper, cardboard or catalogs
  • Any plastic marked 3 thru 7
  • Drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, mirrors, window or auto glass, light bulbs, ceramics, broken glass
  • Spray cans, paint cans, coat hangers, or metal household items

Remember YOU are responsible to separate the waste you generate - not your refuse collector.

Mixed paper recycling
Mixed paper is not an acceptable item for your blue bin. However, there is a backyard collection program for mixed paper such as magazines, junk mail, envelopes, loose paper, wrapping paper. Click here for more information.

All recyclables can be brought to the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility.

What happens to the recyclables collected from the Blue Bins?
The recyclables are delivered to the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility (Transfer Station) where they are combined with the newspapers, glass, metal and plastic recyclables brought by individuals. They are then taken to the Intermediate Processing Center (IPC) in Stratford, CT and separated. Redeemable cans and bottles are returned for deposit. Remaining aluminum products are baled for shipping to a smelter. Tin products are baled and shipped first to a detinner and then to a steel mill. Glass is sorted by color, crushed and shipped to bottle and jar manufacturers. Newspapers are baled and sent to paper processors.
