About Recycling
Each one of Connecticut's 3 milliion citizens generates about one ton of trash each year.
While most of this garbage was historically dumped into solid waste landfills, we are now
quickly running out of space. It is imperative that we diligently reduce, reuse and recycle
our trash - both for ourselves and our children.
For Greenwich residents, pitching in is easy. Since the recycling of many items became
a Connecticut state law in 1991, Greenwich has been a leader in implementing innovative
and creative recycling programs. The Town's four part program consists of:
- Blue bin curbside pickup
- Mixed paper backyard pickup
- Recycling drop off at Holly Hill Transfer Station
- Household hazardous waste disposal on designated Town-wide drop off days
This program is not only simple to follow, it is also highly effective. Beyond what the
law requires, other materials brought to the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility are
moved out to be recycled - and reused.
How it Works
Blue bin recyclables are delivered to the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility
(Transfer Station) where they are combined with the newspapers, glass, metal and plastic
recyclables brought by individuals. They are then taken to the Intermediate Processing
Center (IPC) in Stratford, CT and separated. Redeemable cans and bottles are returned
for deposit. Remaining aluminum products are baled for shipping to a smelter. Tin
products are baled and shipped first to a detinner and then to a steel mill. Glass
is sorted by color, crushed and shipped to bottle and jar manufacturers. Newspapers
are baled and sent to paper processors.
Greenwich was the first Connecticut community to mandate the collection of mixed paper,
which now brings in revenue for the Town - and its taxpayers. Our mixed paper is
currently purchased by Marcal Paper Mills in New Jersey, where it is transformed
into other paper products.
Corrugated cardboard is also a mandated recyclable. Residents are encouraged to
bring their cardboard to Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility.
Vehicle batteries, scrap metal and used motor oil are marketed items too.
After all the recyclables have been removed, the rest is taken to the
Bridgeport RESCO waste-to-energy facility. The trash is incinerated at high
temperature and converted to energy. The remaining materials go to the ash
landfill out of state.
By following the Town's four part program, residents can send 25% to 40% less
garbage to be incinerated each month!
