Sewer Division:
Smoke Testing Program
Smoke testing is another element in the Town's overall program to inspect its wastewater collection system and identify sources of inflow and infiltration. Removing these sources helps improve overall performance of the collection system, particularly during wet weather.
Smoke testing allows us to locate places where rain and groundwater can enter the sanitary sewer collection system. The Town's Fire and Police Departments are notified when we conduct this work.
What is in the smoke?: For specific information about the smoke product please read the
MSDS sheet (35MB PDF). The smoke used is relatively non-toxic; however, exposure should be avoided. If you notice smoke at your property during the time of the inspection please notify the staff in the field and they will ventilate the area. If you notice smoke after the inspection has been completed in your area please contact the Fire Department and the Sewer Division for assistance.
How will I know when my neighborhood is being tested?: Several days prior to smoke testing in
specific neighborhoods, we will place flyers on all residences to be affected. An example flyer may be downloaded
here. (133KB PDF)
