Applying For a
State Building Code Modification
Modifications from the Connecticut State Building Code (CSBC) can be obtained from the
Office of the State Building Inspector. Modifications requests are appropriate when
circumstances arise that make it difficult to attain compliance with the CSBC or when
construction methods that are not covered by the CSBC are proposed.
The procedure to file a modification is as follows:
- Obtain the modification application forms from the link below or from the Office of Building Inspection, 2nd floor, Town Hall.
- Complete the forms and bring them to the Office of Building Inspection for the signature of the Building Official. The State Building Inspector's Office will not accept an application without this signature.
- The Building Official will check the application to insure it is correctly filled out and that you have indicated which code section you are requesting the modification from. He/she will also comment on the request as appropriate before signing.
- The application will be returned to the applicant. It is then the responsibility of the applicant to mail or fax the completed application form to the State Building Inspector's Office.
- When the applicant receives the decision from the State he/she should notify this office of the decision. The State does send a copy to this office but sometimes it is delayed.
The applicant should include a clear, concise explanation of the principles on
which the modification request is based. If the space provided on the application
form is insufficient it is suggested the applicant provide this explanation on a separate
attachment. If plans, details or photographs are appropriate to help explain the request,
they should also be included.
