About Recycling
Each one of Connecticut's 3 million citizens generates about one ton of trash each year.
While most of this garbage was historically dumped into solid waste landfills, 100% of all
MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) aka trash and garbage, is now burned at waste-to-energy
facilities. This method reduces the amount of landfill space required by 90% but
landfills for ash are quickly running out of space. Disposal of trash is one of the
single most expensive line items in the Town's budget. It is imperative that we diligently
reduce, reuse and recycle our trash - bot for ourselves and our children.
For Greenwich residents, pitching in is easy. Since the recycling of many items became
a Connecticut state law in 1991, Greenwich has been a leader in implementing innovative
and creative recycling programs. The Town's four part program consists of:
This program is not only simple to follow, it is also highly effective. Beyond what the
law requires, other materials brought to the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility are
moved out to be recycled - and reused.
