Dangers of Carbon Monoxide:

If power is lost, please keep safety in mind when using an alternative heating source and consider the following:

• Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death.  A single gas-powered generator can produce as much as 100 times more poisonous Carbon Monoxide gas than a car’s exhaust.
• Never use a generator inside your home, basement or garage.  Opening the garage door does not make it safe.
• Never use a generator in a flooded area.
• Operate generators outdoors as far away from your house as possible.  The National Institute of Standards and Technology reports that even 15 feet away may still be dangerous because the CO fumes can enter the home through windows, doors or vents.
• Never refuel a generator while it is running or hot.
• Install CO detectors inside the home near all the sleeping areas.
• Electric or Gas stoves should never be used in an attempt to heat your home or any other heating element that may be dangerous in emitting gasses.
• Be wary that low vents, especially dryer vents, can be blocked by drifting snow.  Remove snow before running such appliances.

Fri. Feb 8 (7:30PM) Governor Dannel P. Malloy declared a state of emergency today in preparation for the coming blizzard which is anticipated to heavily impact the state Friday and Saturday. The Governor is asking all residents to limit nonessential travel so that emergency personnel and utility crews can have road priority.

Blizzard warnings remain in effect for the entire state, as well as coastal flood warnings for Fairfield County.  At 3:45 p.m., radar and surface observations indicated heavy snow moving into Southern Connecticut.  This evening, snowfall rates of up to 5” per hour are expected, and zero visibility is forecast.  Lows will be dropping into the 20’s statewide with Northeast Winds gusting to 50 MPH inland and up to 70 MPH along the coast.

Snowfall accumulations of up to 36 inches are considered possible.  Overnight travel will be especially treacherous Friday evening.  Winter weather warnings and travel advisories have been issued.

There is a possibility of localized flooding in coastal and low-lying areas.  Flooding potential will be greatest at times of high tide.  The next high tide is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. tonight.  Water elevations are predicted to be 6.5 feet – 8.5 feet.  Strong winds will accompany this event and the snow from this storm will be wet and heavy.  Power lines may be affected.  Residents should be prepared for both the possibility of flooding and temporary power outages.  Residents in low lying areas should expect street and basement flooding.

The Town’s Emergency Operations Center has been activated for this event and all appropriate municipal departments are preparing equipment and adding additional staff to be ready for this storm and its aftermath.  The Town of Greenwich Board of Selectman has declared a Snow Emergency effective at 12:00 Noon on Friday, February 8th continuing into Saturday at least.  Vehicles are not permitted to be parked or otherwise remain standing or stationary on posted Snow Emergency routes during a snow emergency.  Vehicles not in compliance are subject to ticketing and immediate towing.  Off-street municipally-owned parking lots can be used for parking vehicles displaced from Snow Emergency routes.

Use caution when shoveling heavy snow to avoid injury.

If you wish to hear the latest message from the Greenwich Emergency Notification System, please call the Greenwich Police Department’s non-emergency number at 203-622-8000 and then either dial #8 or follow the automated voice prompts to listen to the recorded community event message.
