1903
Nine acres of land with four buildings on Parsonage Road was donated to the Town by Robert M. Bruce and called The Greenwich General Hospital. The hospital was dedicated to the care of contagious diseases.

A tuberculosis pavilion was built with funds donated by Mrs. Nathaniel Witherell.

1917
The "new" Greenwich Hospital, merging functions of Greenwich General and Milbank Hospitals, was established on Perryridge Road. The old facility on Parsonage Road was renamed The Municipal Hospital. Its sole function became the care of communicable diseases.

With demand for tuberculosis sanitariums declining due to more effective treatments for the disease, the pavilion was turned into a nurses' residence. (it later became the residence for the head of the Health Department.) With increasing need for the treatment of chronic disease, a new hospital building (now Administration) was built with funds again donated by Mrs. Witherell.

The name was changed to The Nathaniel Witherell Hospital. ("Hospital" was later dropped.)

The hospital was remodeled to include facilities for rehabilitation therapy and dedicated exclusively to the treatment of the chronically ill.

The Nathaniel Witherell Auxiliary was founded by Mrs. Stillman Rockefeller, Mrs. John Howland, and Mrs. Robert Craig.

A new one-story wing on the south side of the building (but later called the "West Wing") was constructed, providing another 50 beds.

The Nathaniel Witherell Board, consisting of seven members, was created by the Representative Town Meeting.

A four-story addition on the north side of the building expanded the facility to 200 beds.

A chapel was added to the east side of the building.

The Patient Trust Fund was created to improve the quality of life of the residents.

The pavilion, now called Pavilion House, was converted to five residential units for the low-income elderly.

Greenwich Adult Day Care (GADC) began renting ground-floor space at The Nathaniel Witherell.

The board was expanded from seven to nine members.

The Nado Fund was created by Mr. Harry L. Nado to be used for employees in need.

A greenhouse was added on the south side to provide residents with horticulture therapy.

Two additional beds were added in the West Wing, bringing the capacity up to its present 202.

The third floor of the center section was converted into six moderate-income residential units, many occupied by town employees.

Short-term rehabilitation services expanded: facility refurbished.

- Witherell upgrades and renovates the Rehab gym area.
- Short-term rehab patients represent 95% of all Witherell admissions.
- The TOG RTM votes by a 85% plurality to have Witherell remain a Town Department.
- The TOG RTM approves Project Renew Witherell. A TOG Building Committee is formed.
