IWWA Addresses Mianus Pond structures In the effort to address 56 structures constructed on Town-owned Mianus Pond without Town permission, the Greenwich Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency proposes to review the structures to bring them into conformance with Agency regulations. The structures include wooden docks and floats, and stone terraces, walls, stairs and patios. The Agency adopted the policy at its November 21, 2005 meeting.
The matter was discussed at the February 16th meeting of the Board of Selectmen. The Agency is seeking the Board's consent to accept, on behalf of the Town, applications from homeowners who wish to maintain docks and other structures on, in, or next to Mianus Pond. The Board deferred action until its March 16th meeting.
"This effort will establish a process by which existing structures can be reviewed by the Town," said Tom Baptist, Wetlands Agency Chair. "The Agency must apply its regulations uniformly throughout the Town," he added "and that includes homeowners who have built or use docks on Town property. Also, any future dock construction on Mianus Pond must receive prior approval from Town authorities."
The 75-acre Town-owned pond was acquired from the State of Connecticut in 1989. The Pond is bordered by more than 100 private properties, but Town ownership includes the land area immediately adjacent to the Pond-a land area that ranges from a few feet to more than 50 feet in width from the edge of the water. Since the Town acquired the Pond, the number of structures has doubled from 28 to 56, with more than 21 new structures built since 1997.
"Mianus Pond is one of Greenwich's most beautiful freshwater resources and is cherished by many in the community," said Mark Massoud, former Director. "The Agency has the regulatory obligation to protect this public resource from pollution or other degradation."
Town residents interested in this matter are urged to contact Michael Chambers, current Director, by email at mchambers@greenwichct.org or by phone at (203) 622-7736, or the Board of Selectmen at (203) 622-7700.
