April 24: 40th Anniversary Earth Day Rally 2-4pm
In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, local officials are planning an Earth Day Sidewalk Parade and Rally to be held on April 24, 2010 from 2-4 p.m. All residents are invited to join the fun, wear their own "Earth Day Hat", and pay tribute to past and present Greenwich citizens who have been leaders in "Keeping the Green in Greenwich." The event is being coordinated by the Conservation Commission's Go Greener Greenwich Committee led by Gayle Hagegard, Nancy Chapin, and Sue Baker.

"We are hoping that families, friends, youth groups, and religious organizations will all participate in this town-wide event," stated Denise Savageau, Conservation Director. "So many people in Greenwich really care about this planet that we call home. This is the time for everyone to come together to celebrate all that has been accomplished and, at the same time, understand that there is still much to be done."

"We are really reaching out to schools and youth groups to participate" explains Hagegard. "These are our future leaders; we want them to part of the history for the next Earth Day." In addition, the Committee is seeking out folks who were part of the effort that celebrated the first Earth Day in 1970. "We would love to hear from residents who participated in the First Earth Day event" stated Conservation Commission member Sue Baker, "If you were involved in 1970, please plan on joining us for this 40th anniversary celebration."

Interested residents should plan to meet at the Greenwich Town Hall at 2 p.m. The sidewalk parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. and move through central Greenwich to the rally site at the Havemeyer Building on Greenwich Ave. The program will include music and recognition of Greenwich's amazing heritage of environmental leaders.
