Did you Know?
The nitrogen limit enforced by the CTDEP permit for Greenwich was 581 lbs. of nitrogen for 2008. Based on the Town’s Sewer Division efforts to manage and improve the treatment plant process at Grass Island, the nitrogen average for 2008 was 479 lbs. This not only represents 102 lbs. LESS of nitrogen discharged from the plant, but also happens to meet the 2014 limit in the 2008 year (six years ahead of schedule). This represents a significant positive impact to the health of the local environment, and also equates to revenue for the Town through the State’s nitrogen credit trading program. Grass Island was 6th overall in the state for plants receiving nitrogen credits and received over $167,000 in nitrogen credits.
