The Police Department began offering the Citizens' Police Academy back in 2003 as a way to foster interaction between the officers and town residents. Participants will establish a better understanding of the role of the police in the community.
The program has proven very successful as requests for participation has grown steadily. Currently, the department runs the program annually.
The Academy can accommodate up to forty local community residents who will participate in classes designed to take them through the different aspects of law enforcement. Academy Instructors consist of highly trained Greenwich Police officers. In addition to the classes, participants will have the opportunity to experience a "ride along" with a supervisor or Field Training Officer (FTO) in the patrol division and a Marine Section ride-a-long aboard the police boat.
Class participants will meet once a week and learn about numerous operations that occur within the department, some of which they may not be aware of or rarely see.
The feedback between participants and officers has been very positive, and gives everyone an opportunity to exchange information about the concerns they have that affect the community.
To inquire about the next academy, calls can be directed to the Greenwich Police Department Community Impact Section Supervisor.
