The mission of the Community Development department is to administer, coordinate, contract, monitor and plan all Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) activities. This process ensures the Town complies with the "Grant Assurances," which are authorized by the Representative Town Meeting and signed by the First Selectman. In addition, part of each year is spent planning and developing the next year's CDBG program.
Block Grant Program returns tax revenue to local communities for the purpose of addressing the needs established by the local communities with an emphasis on viable neighborhoods, decent housing, a suitable living environment and expanding economic opportunities for low and moderate incomes. The CDBG regulations provide that the HUD Consolidated Plan be developed each year to fund eligible activities with maximum citizen input and the program benefit at least 70 percent of people with low and moderate income, according to CDBG income limits.
