First Selectman's Message
Welcome to the Town of Greenwich Web site. It is our goal to provide you with an online one-stop
shop for all information about the Town of Greenwich. We want to make it easier for you to live,
work, visit and do business in Town.
Located on Long Island Sound just thirty miles east of New York City, Greenwich is recognized
as a premier residential community. We have 8,000 acres of protected land, including 32
miles of coast, 20 parks, four beaches and a municipal golf course. In a recent Robb Report
Greenwich was ranked first among the top ten places to live in America.
With a population of approximately 61,000, our economy is thriving with about a dozen of the
100 largest corporations in Connecticut headquartered here. Our leading industries are financial
services, real estate, retail, home construction and home renovation.
The value of all real property exceeds $50 billion, the highest in Connecticut, with the
median price of a home at approximately $1,500,000 and the average home at approximately $2,208,000.
Greenwich prides itself on fiscal responsibility as evidenced by its adherence to a
"pay-as-you-go" philosophy. Thanks to excellent fiscal management, Greenwich property
tax rates are among the lowest in the state.
We value education here. There are approximately 8,900 students in our public education
system at 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and a 4-year high school. Pursuing
post-secondary education are 89.8 percent of our public school graduates.
Governed by the Greenwich Board of Education, an elected 8-member, bi-partisan citizen
panel and the Superintendent of Schools, our school system is recognized as one of the
outstanding in the country. Augmented by our private and independent schools, our
community offers outstanding educational opportunities.
Our four libraries and numerous cultural events add to the resources available to our
residents. The Bruce Museum is the second most popular museum in Connecticut and the
fourth in New England with 110,000 people visiting each year.
The spirit of volunteerism is an important characteristic of our Town. Residents care
about our community and continually step forward to be involved. It is particularly
evident in our form of government. The First Selectman and two Selectmen comprise the
paid Board of Selectmen. The Board of Estimate and Taxation, the Town's Finance Board,
is comprised of 12 elected members and the Representative Town Meeting consists of
230 individuals who are all volunteers elected for two-year terms. Citizens also are
appointed as members of boards and commissions that have policy-making authority.
Certainly Greenwich exhibits "democracy at its best."
Town employees are committed to serving the citizens of Greenwich to ensure that
Greenwich provides excellent services. I encourage your comments and questions.
Please feel free to call or email me.
