News:

Pedestrian Safety - Public Workshops: Nov. 13 & 18
The First Selectman's Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee (Committee) will hold two public workshops to obtain the community's views on the criteria that should be used to determine the streets that need sidewalks. The criteria will then be used to develop the sidewalk master plan, identifying sidewalk projects that should be pursued as public needs. The resulting master plan will be presented for public comment at a third public workshop.

The first workshop will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Western Greenwich Civic Center at 449 Pemberwick Road (at the corner of Pemberwick Road and Glenville Road) in the Community Room. The second workshop will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center at 90 Harding Road (at the corner of Harding Road and Forest Avenue) in Old Greenwich.

This effort began with the work of the Selectmen's Pedestrian Safety Committee (SPSC) which prepared a Town Wide Inventory of Pedestrian Safety Needs (the Inventory) that identified areas where either the absence of sidewalks or the condition of existing sidewalks or other factors, such as absence of crosswalks, raised safety issues for pedestrians. The Committee is utilizing the Inventory's data and reviewing the criteria that will be used to establish a sidewalk master plan, based on public need.

The Committee seeks public input on the criteria for determining whether a sidewalk is needed on a particular street. The Committee will hold two public workshops, scheduled for November 13 and November 18. At the workshops the Committee will explain the various criteria that could be employed in this effort and take public comment on those criteria and any other standards that members of the community believe should be utilized. The Committee will facilitate public comments by providing a questionnaire for members of the community to complete. The questionnaire will be available at the workshops and posted concurrently on the Town's website. The Committee expects that the November 13 workshop will be taped by Channel 79 and broadcast at a later date for persons who cannot attend the workshop in person.
