Board of Education
Q. How, where and when do I register my children in the Greenwich public schools? A. Kindergarten To register children for Kindergarten, parents must provide a birth certificate and proof of residence. Before beginning school, the nurse must review your child's record of immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella, DPT (diptheria, pertussis, tetanus), polio, HIB (Haemophilus Influenza type B), and the results of a recent tuberculin skin test.
Your child must also have a complete physical examination documented on the school health assessment form. In order to enroll in Kindergarten, a child must have reached the age of five on or before January 1 of his/her Kindergarten year.
Although age 5 is the compulsory age for students to enter kindergarten, parents may choose to have their child wait until age 6, but they must sign a form at the Board of Education. They may decide again, when their child is six, to have the child home for another year. By age 7, the child must attend school or be schooled at home.
The Kindergarten registration process generally begins the March prior to the September your child id eligible to enter Kindergarten. Each school holds and orientation at which you may sign up for an appointment to register your child. Each school also holds a visitation day for incoming Kindergarten students in May. Schedules for the orientation/registration process are run in the Greenwich Time, on the district web site www.greenwichschools.org, and/or by contacting the schools directly.
General Enrollment If you are new to Greenwich, you must first determine which school your child will be enrolled in, which is based on your home address. If you are unsure of which school you are districted for, contact John Curtin, Assistant Superintendent at 625-7416. You may enroll your child at the school or at the Board of Education's Havemeyer Building, 290 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT.
Q. What is the school holiday and vacation calendar? A. All holiday and vacation schedules are posted on the Greenwich Public School Web site. Go to http://greenwichschools.org, the first calendar listed is the most current school year. Generally school calendars are approved by the Board of Education a year and a half to two years in advance, so the following year's calendar is also available on the Web site. You may also choose from a listing of individual school and program calendars, as well as the Board of Education's calendar of meetings.
Printed copies of the school holiday and vacation calendar are available at each of the schools or by contacting the district Communications Office at 625-7456.
