Q. Does the Department of Health provide nursing care in people's homes?
A. Yes, frail or chronically ill residents who would benefit from a nursing assessment every two to four week, are eligible for services through the Town of Greenwich. If a resident is acutely ill or requires nursing services more frequently than once every two weeks, it is best to contact the private physician, who can make a referral for Greenwich Hospital Home CAre Services.
Q. Does the Department of Health provide immunizations?
A. Yes, public health nurses provide routine (not travel) child and adult immunizations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. For travel immunizations, contact the Stamford Department of Health at (203) 977-4371.
Q. When is the lab open?
A. The lab is open to the pubic Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Q. How long does it take to get test results?
A. Turnaround times vary, but in general, results are ready within a week of sample submission.
Q. Can I bring anything to the lab to have it analyzed?
A. Please call the lab or refer to the website for sampling instructions regarding water, radon, or ticks.
Q. Why does the Health Department even have a lab?
A. The Greenwich Health Department Laboratory is involved with the mission of public health (promotion of health and prevention of disease in the community) in its core functions of assessment, policy development, and assurance. The lab helps to assess the health status of the community through its environmental testing and clinical screening programs, contributes to the development of health policy by serving as a resource for scientific data, and helps assure that health standards are being met through compliance testing.
Q. What are the steps necessary to add a bedroom, pool, tennis court, etc. to my home or property if on septic?
A. Determine the location of your septic system and well (if you are not on public water) on your property. If you do not have your homeowner's copy of the "as-built" plan and Permit to Discharge, you may obtain copies from the Division of Environmental Services; office hours are 8 AM to 2:30 PM Monday - Friday.
Any addition (i.e. - pool, tennis court, gazebo, etc) on the property that would take up usable space that might be needed for a replacement septic system would require the homeowner to provide a 100% Replacement Area prior to the Health Department signing off on building plans.
A One (1) bedroom addition to the home would also require a 100% Replacement Area. Two or more (2+) bedrooms would require actually physically adding to the existing septic system in addition to the 100% Replacement Area.
If a new structure that contains plumbing is to be built on the property it will require it's own septic system and a reserve. All other buildings with septic systems on the property would require a 100% Replacement Area.
We strongly suggest that anyone considering the above changes to their home or property come into the Division of Environmental Services during office hours and consult with the Environmental Hygienist on Duty.
Q. What steps are required to open a Food Service Establishment, Body Care Facility, or Massage Establishment?
A. The above types of facilities require that a "Plan Review" be completed by the prospective applicant and be processed by the Health Department. Plan review information can be obtained on the Health Department website, or plan review packets can be obtained in the Division of Environmental Services; office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
Each applicant must complete the plan review packet and meet all of the requirements listed in the packet prior to submittal to the Health Department (excluding actual construction). There are fees for Plan Reviews and for the Licenses to Operate (for specific fees go to Health Department) which must be submitted along with the plan review application. Upon submittal of the plan review the application is assigned to an Environmental Hygienist in the Department of Health. Once the establishment has been assigned to a hygienist, a "walk-through" of the facility will be scheduled and conducted in order to determine specific changes or additions that are needed in order to operate the facility properly and to code; this information can then be put on the building plans.
Massage establishments require a police background check of the owners and all massage therapists prior to the establishment's approval to operate. All massage therapists must be currently licensed by the State of Connecticut.
Food service establishments would require the chef to have a Qualified Food Operator Certificate received from a State of Connecticut approved facility (see the Health Department) web site for the list of approved facilities).
Body care facilities require a current State of Connecticut Hairdresser/Cosmetician license for their employees who perform hair care and pedicures. Any other services offered at these facilities will be reviewed; any other license requirements will be addressed.
Once a "Plan Review" is completed to satisfaction, the Application for a License to operate is reviewed. Upon successful review the Health Department will issue a License to operate to the facility. License schedules are as follows:
Food Service Establishments:
October 1 - September 30 of following year.
Body Care/Massage:
April 1 - March 31 of following year.
All Licenses to Operate must be renewed annually.
No approval to begin operations will be given by the Health Department until approvals are given by all of the necessary departments in the Town of Greenwich (Building, Zoning, Tax, Police and Fire).
Q. What are the noise ordinance regulations

Q. Does the Department of Health provide tuberculin skin testing (tuberculosis screening)?
A. Yes the tests are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. There is no fee if a person has been exposed to an active case of tuberculosis. If the test is required by an employer, there is a fee. Plan to return within 48-72 hours following the test, to have the test interpreted.
Q. What services does the laboratory offer?
A. The lab provides a variety of public health services for the public and for other branches of the town government. Services available to the public include: testing of well water for bacterial and chemical contamination; identification and testing of ticks for the Lyme Disease bacterium, radon testing; premarital blood testing; and testing for blood lead and cholesterol.
Q. Where is the lab located?
A. The Health Department Laboratory is located on the ground floor of the Greenwich Town Hall, at the opposite end of the building from the parking garage.
