Frequently Asked Questions

Social Services

Q. What options exist for my elderly parent, who really shouldn't live alone any more?
A. Many options exist, depending on how many medical and safety needs your mom has, family finances, and what her preferences are. She may do well and enjoy the companionship of a congregate residence that supplies meals and housekeeping. If she needs more assistance than that, she might do well in a licensed Home for the Aged or an assisted living facility, where additional services are available to residents.

If she has one or more serious medical/psychological conditions that limit daily life activities, she may require and qualify for skilled nursing home care. Intermediate nursing home care is also available for those less impaired. Physician's approval is always required for admission.

Call the Commission on Aging and/or the Greenwich Dept. of Social Services for further resource information. Social Services can help you obtain an assessment of the level of care needed, and assist you in filing applications for housing and/or Medicaid to cover costs, if needed.

Q. Does low-cost housing exist for families like mine who work but don't earn enough to pay the high rents in Greenwich?
A. Low-cost family housing is generally limited to public housing units and certificates issued by the Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich for private market units with rents below certain levels. There is high demand and a fixed supply of this subsidized housing. Greenwich Social Services can assist you in the application and documentation process, or you may call or visit the Housing Authority directly.

A waiting list exists for units. The waiting list is closed to new applications for long periods. Application periods open briefly every few years. Social Services can assist you in filing swiftly.

Q. How do I make sure my dad gets to his medical and other essential appointments? He can't drive himself any more.
A. Greenwich has many transportation options for elderly and disabled residents. If your dad can travel alone and unassisted during visits, he can use Call A Ride, TAG, or the American Red Cross for medical appointments. If he needs assistance to and from the vehicle, or during the appointment, he will need an escort. Greenwich Social Services provides escorted transportation for its clients. Your dad will be assessed for other possible needs. He must have other needs as well for Social Services to provide escorted transportation for him.

Q. How do I avoid having my utilities shut off again for non-payment? I just don't earn enough to make ends meet with the high cost of living here, and get behind in my bills.
A. Budgeting and money management counseling may be the answer. There are also several types of Energy Assistance programs you might qualify for, depending on your income, age, and family status. These services, and mediation with utility companies, are available to you at no cost at Social Services.
