Town Receives Grant for Fishway Access Walk The Town of Greenwich was awarded $40,000 today from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund to help fund construction of an access walk at the Mianus River Pond Fish way. This was part of nearly $1 million granted to local organizations and communities through the new grant program which pools money from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Hudson River Foundation's New York City Environmental Fund. Conservation Director Denise Savageau, and her husband, Michael Aurelia, who helps monitor the fish way were on hand for the presentation.
"We are absolutely thrilled to receive this grant," stated Denise Savageau, Conservation Director. "The walk way that will provide a safe access for monitoring and maintenance of the fish way. This will also provide access for education including school groups."
The access walk way will be part of the restoration of the Mianus River Dam Pump House that Greenwich Adult Day Care is undertaking. As part of the lease, GADC, agreed to maintain access to the fish way by installing the new walk. The Town's Conservation department promised to help find funds to assist with this effort. "We are so happy to receive this funding," confirmed Carol Burns, Executive Director for GADC. "It brings us closer to achieving our goal of opening the new GADC on the Mianus. The location on the pond is beautiful and the fish way is just part of the whole picture. It will be a wonderful setting for the seniors who attend."
