Town Receives EPA Brownfield Grant Town Receives EPA Brownfield Grant for former Cos Cob Power Plant Site
EPA announced today that the Town of Greenwich has been awarded $200,000 for the cleanup of the Cos Cob Power Plant site. Greenwich one of 106 communities from across the United States selected to receive a cleanup grant from the EPA Brownfields Program. First Selectman Jim Lash and Conservation Director Denise Savageau were presented the award by EPA officials at a ceremony held today at the Stamford Government Center. Stamford also received funding from EPA.
"This is great news," stated Lash, "we have been working on the Cos Cob Power Plant for several years now. EPA has been very supportive of this project and we appreciate that. The funding gives validity to the work we are doing to clean up the site." The Town was previously selected to participate in EPA's Targeted Brownfield Assessment program. This program provided in-kind service from EPA in the form of an assessment of hazardous materials on site. Information from this assessment was used in the development of the cleanup grant application.
According to Savageau, the Town is making great progress in the remediation and development of the site. "There are three key departments working on the Cos Cob Power Plant site," she explains. " Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Conservation are all involved in this effort. With our consultants, Metcalf and Eddy, we have completed the Phase III evaluations and hope to have the PCB cleanup completed in the fall. The funding is just in time for that cleanup." Once the PCBs are removed, the restoration plan calls for capping the rest of the site and developing it as waterfront park that will include both active and passive recreation areas.
